Second Ring of Walls

A second wall was built in the surroundings of the castle to protect the population, their harvests, and animals, which is known as the Second Ring of Walls. After the castle was conquered by the Christians, Afonso Henriques had given the authority to the Knights Templar to defend and take care of the castle by restructuring the already existing buildings. When you witness this structure through your Moorish Castle Tickets, you will understand that there was a considerable size of population residing in the vicinity of the castle.

Silos
Silos

The Silos in the castle represent the place that has been used to store cereal and leguminous crops since prehistoric times. This place was discovered by the Moorish people in al-Andalus on a large scale. You will find this technique of storing food grains in numerous Arabic agricultural treatises. These excavated semi-spherical cavities in different shapes and sizes can be seen all around the castle on the rocky substrate.

Islamic Neighborhood
Islamic Neighborhood

The Islamic Neighborhood is another place of exploration with Moorish Castle Sintra Tickets that allows you to find silos, the remains of the inhabitation, and the foundations of a community oven. Tomb
Tomb

When the burial grounds of the Christians have been destroyed during the restoration work by Ferdinand II, it was ordered to keep all bones in a Tomb. The carving of this Tomb had been done with a lunar crescent and a cross. On visiting this part of the castle, you will find an inscription that reads, “What man brought together, only God may separate” as they could not identify the difference between the Moors and Christain's remains.

Church of São Pedro de Canaferrim
Church of São Pedro de Canaferrim

Constructed in the 12th century, the Church of São Pedro de Canaferrim was the first Parish church of Sintra and remained a worshiping ground until the 14th century. The construction of the church has been done with very thick walls using granite stone masonry. With the Moorish Castle Tickets, you will find the remains of the paintings dating back to the 15th century in the apse of the church. In 1840, King Ferdinand II transformed the church into a romantic luscious garden in the Park of Pena.

Christian Medieval Necropolis

Christian Medieval Necropolis is situated over the former Islamic Neighborhood. When the Islamic population vacated the surroundings of the castle, the remains of their homes, silos, and ovens can be seen. The excavation of the cemetery revealed that the place has been in use for over 300 years.

History of Moorish Castle

History of Moorish Castle

With the Moorish Castle Sintra Tickets, you can dive into the depth of the history of the castle that was founded under Islamic rule. This millennium-old castle was constructed in such a place that it could protect both the bordering territory and the maritime access routes to Lisbon city. If you look at the artifacts, you will come to know about the existence of the populations in the Islamic Quarter.

The Moors used to live in this castle in 1147 under the reign of the first King of Portugal. After these lands were given to Gualdim Pais in 1154 and when the Christians started to reside in the Moorish Castle, the Islamic Quarter started disappearing, thereby giving way to a Medieval town. When the war broke out between the Moors and Christians, the population started vacating the fortification. You will find the Church of São Pedro de Canaferrim constructed between the two rings of walls.

During the 19th century, King Ferdinand II started the restoration process of the castle to keep the Romantic spirit alive and give new life to the medieval site. When the restoration work was going on, several Christain burial grounds were destroyed. Hence, it was ordered to construct tombs and keep all the bones in them. Since both the Christain and Moors graves cannot be identified, an inscription was placed on the tomb that says, “What man brought together, only God may separate”. The archaeological excavation continued since 1976, and innumerable discoveries have been recovered until now. The castle also received a place in the UNESCO World Heritage Site depicting it to be a fundamental component of history.
